Toyota's Hilux is the longest-running 4x4 pick-up in Britain, now into its sixth generation. It has long been overtaken by the Mitsubishi L200 and Nissan Navara in the UK, but the new one is unrecognisable from the early farmer specials and globally it's the company's biggest selling vehicle after the Corolla.

Built on an all-new ladder-frame chassis, it is much more rigid than before, giving improved handling and better ride comfort. Noise levels are down, the interior design is a world apart, fit and finish is better and there's substantially more space.

That's because this Hilux is over a foot (340mm) longer than its predecessor, something rear passengers will be eternally grateful for, even if those driving it aren't so pleased.

The first models of the new generation came with Toyota's 102bhp 2.5-litre diesel engine with a measly 192lb-ft of torque, but from the start of 2007 that's been improved to 118bhp and 240lb-ft thanks to the fitment of an intercooler.

Most will go for the new 3.0-litre with 169bhp and 253lb-ft of torque. Available with either a five-speed manual or four-speed auto, the range stops with the well-priced Invincible

The single cab and double cab versions are built in South Africa, with only the extended 'Extra' cab coming from Thailand.

Toyota has always made reliable vehicles and the no-nonsense Hilux has gained a reputation for being virtually indestructible.

That was dramatically proven when Top Gear famously tried (and failed) to kill an 80s Hilux, even collapsing a multi-story building under it.

The D-4D diesel engine is well proven - the 3.0-litre also goes into the Land Cruiser - and there's nothing too new-fangled or fancy here to go wrong.

It's all underpinned by a three-year, 60,000-mile mechanical warranty, three years/60,000 miles paint and surface corrosion cover (one year for the load bed) and six years/unlimited mileage anti-corrosion cover (one year for the load bed).

Stick it in four-wheel drive (low or high ratios), and it could go more or less anywhere. Mid-spec HL3 and high-spec Invincible versions have an automatically-disconnecting differential which allows for switching between high-ratio two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive at speeds of up to 50mph, and shifts from high-ratio four-wheel drive to low-ratio four-wheel drive at up to 5mph to keep you moving.

If the old 102bhp 2.5-litre engine couldn't pull a sailor off your sister, the new 118bhp version could probably prevent the transgression.

That's why it's relegated to HL2 and HL3 spec only, leaving the three-litre to power both HL3 and Invincible. With 169bhp, it shares the top power spot with the Nissan Navara and finally gives the Hilux the muscle it looks like it should have.

There's muscle rather than raw speed there, although it felt a bit tight and would benefit from a few thousand miles of driving.

With all that strength, Toyota is playing it ultra-conservative to limit the max towing weight to just 2,250kg.

Security-wise, there's an alarm and remote central locking as standard-fit on most models, though, which is good. What you don't get is a locking rear tailgate - important for securing a load when you've got a hardtop or tonneau.

Running a pick-up truck with a double cab and seats is still a useful tax dodge for those entitled to claim back VAT - hence the popularity of vehicles like this for people who need a working vehicle during the week but enough seats to take the kids out at the weekends.

Coupled to that, the Hilux's D-4D common-rail diesel engines are impressively economical for day-to-day running. Toyota quotes 34mpg for both the 2.5-litre and 3.0-litre, with the automatic dropping that to 30.1mpg.

It has also been designed for low maintenance; Toyota claims that it's the cheapest vehicle in its class to service. However, intervals are now one of the shortest in the class at 10,000 miles/one year.

The resale value should be high.

The interior is revelation to anyone who came out of the old Hilux. Space has mushroomed in every direction, but it's in the back seat that you'll feel it the most. It now reclines at a proper car-like angle, and offers more than enough leg and headroom. The base also tips up to give a huge cube of storage space, but it doesn't split 60/40 as in the Nissan.

Now the engines have been upgraded, refinement is much better. Engine noise is suppressed at speed, except in the automatic, and the ride is calm enough to take it on long journeys without fear.

Equipment levels are fine, if not lavish as they are in top models of the L200 and Navara. Entry-level HL2 versions get electric windows, air con, remote locking, CD player, an alarm and body-coloured bumpers and front grille.

Jump to the HL3 models and there are (somewhat dwarfed) 15" alloys, chrome exterior trim, electric/heated door mirrors, alloy side steps and a Thatcham Category 1 alarm.

The Invincible brings a new combined sat nav and CD player, scuff plates, chrome side bars, front fog lamps and 16" alloys. There's cruise control on the automatic (£1,300 extra) and a range of hard-tops, tonneau covers and bike racks from the option list.
