Following closely on the heels of the Pinin Van, and lining up alongside the L200 pick-ups, Mitsubishi has decided to enter the LCV waters with Commercial versions of its highly acclaimed Shogun off-roader. Shogun Van is based upon the latest 3.2DI-D three- and five-door passenger cars and sports a 3,200cc direct-injection turbodiesel under the bonnet. It's capable of producing maximum power of 162 bhp at 3,800rpm and developing peak torque of 275 lb/ft at just 2,000rpm. The SWB can also be had with a 200 bhp 3.5-litre multivalve petrol V6 GDI. This engine doesn't have the ultimate sophistication of a common rail unit but it certainly packs a punch. The amount of low-down torque on tap is astonishing and makes it a pleasure to drive; in town or out on the motorway. All-round independent suspension endows this Shogun with an on-road ride quality that belies it's off-road credentials; which are substantial, thanks to a very technically advanced, dual-range, five-speed selectable four-wheel drive manual transmission. The power steering is remarkably direct in its action which helps make it relaxing to drive. The cab is spacious and comfortable with plenty of storage space and the driving position is high and natural. Load volumes are roughly 1.7m3 and 2.7m3 (LWB), gross payloads are 530kg and 685kg (LWB) and it can tow a braked trailer of up to 2,800kg (SWB) and 3,300kg. Fuel consumption is pretty reasonable at 29.5mpg for the SWB. VERDICT It may be on the expensive side but this is one hell of a van range, if you need four-wheel drive, that is. The diesel engine is excellent, despite no common rail injection. Everyone should have one of these on their driveway.
